Bespoke designing for preloved furniture
After years of being a fashion designer and a collector of anything vintage, in particular furniture, Jema created Fashion to Furniture to combine the two.
Fashion to Furniture lives by the ethos: loved, restored and reused. Each piece is lovingly reimagined, working in tandem with the customer, to create bespoke pieces of furniture.

We have been trusted to give this family heirloom a new lease of life, thanks to Francesca and her sister. Together we have made a plan. This chair is going to look completely different…

In between all the Queen Jubilee celebrations, I managed to start stripping the wingback chair. Making a photographic record of the original construction will help me when it comes to rebuilding it.

Next stage for this chair is nearly complete. I’ve discovered that the chair was originally made in 1976 and was called “Georgian buttoned back chair” as well finding a penny and Portuguese Escudo coin

While waiting for the wood glue to dry, I thought I would do a quick sketch of the wingback chair with its new fabrics.

Apparently Mr Camel wanted to test the newly sprung seat!

For the arms of the wing back chair I decided to do the traditional method of using jute webbing. This creates a slight spring for that extra comfort. Next stage is fabric !!

This Designers Guild fabric is lovely to work with and looks amazing with the stripped down and oiled legs.

Hand stitching the outside panels on this wingback is a hard on my hands. However, the finished chair is in sight.

All finished and back in situ. Doesn’t she look smart!!
